Indeed I have been using video clips to sparkle curiosity on a topic I have taught.

   

Zaption - interactive video lesson

Sad to update that Zaption platform was officially closed on the 30 September 2016

I was introduced to Zaption by a fellow colleague and decided to try it out as I could embed it on my Google site for self-directed learning, especially those who had missed my lessons.

It is easy to use and great for self-directed learning and definitely a great tool for flipped classroom. I definitely agree that Zaption makes online video interactive and this will definitely engage students better and drives deeper learning. The student also can pace his/her learning using the interactive video.

I have screenshot the steps I took to create a lesson using a video. After you have logged into Zaption, click on"lessons"on the top menu and click on "New Lesson"on the scrolled down menu.

Copy and paste the url of the online video or upload one from your folder.

Confirm the video clip and click on "add this video for lesson".

I like the ability to trim the video clip by dragging the markers to mark the start and end of the clip as some video clips might be too long. A more effective video clip should be less than 5 mins.

You can then choose to include interactive elements from the top menu - multiple choice, check box, open response, drawings, image or text slides into your video lesson.

Other than MCQ, you can also add in check box, drawing, image or text slide just by clicking on the icons shown below and drag them to the main panel or side bar:

Click on publish and a pop-up window will appear for you to enter a title for your lesson.

The best part of using this tool is that you can analyse the responses of your students to keep track of their learning!

I have tried created 2 lessons - one on internal structure of the earth (http://zapt.io/tvh8bz2u) and the other on Kyoto Protocol (http://zapt.io/trap3wss) and embedded the clips onto my Geography Google site - https://sites.google.com/a/moe.edu.sg/sec3geog/weather-and-climate/wc-k2-lesson-8

Exporting powerpointslides into window moviemaker

An easy way to convert powerpoints into video - just open up the powerpoint slides and then save the file as Windows metafile. A folder with all the slide images will be created. You can then open up window movie maker and then import the images. You can also add the pictures and music etc by dragging them to the timeline.

A very good video clip on how to use window movie maker from Youtube. Pay attention to how you can insert the pictures, music and the titles. You can enhance your video clip with transition effect. Just remember to publish your video by saving it as a movie file as shown in the last part of the video.
A Geography Project Task was given out to the students this year - to submit a 5 min video clip based on the river journey from the source to the mouth. The students also need to submit a short writeup with the synopsis (the content of your video) as well as credits given to your group members and the list of reference for the video. One example of a video clip can be found @ this link -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjZLAw_lgZ4 which is a similar project done by a group of students. For sounds of river or waterfall - you might want to download from http://www.jetcityorange.com/SoundFiles/nature-sounds.html Just right click on the icon next to the track and select 'save target as'. Some of you might want to mix the sound with another piece of music which you have - the trick is after you have publish and save the video clip, import it and then add in the new audio track - you can right click on the audio timeline to adjust the volume. As the file size is big - students were advised to make use of http://www.sendspace.com/ - just browse and upload the file and enter the email address of the recipient e.g. lily_lee68@yahoo.com.sg. I can then retrieve the file from sendspace with the link sent. A reminder - DO NOT sent the project file (mmv) send only the movie file (wmv). The project file should be kept by you in case you need to make amendments. If you send us the project file we would not be able to see the video as the pictures and music are actually stored in your computer. We will only be assessing the end product which is movie file (wmv) which you have created.
